Winter is one of my favorite times of the year. Even though it is cold and sometimes uncomfortable, I really enjoy the sunny weather and crispness of cold air. Whenever this time of year comes around one of my favorite activities is to make a delicious winter tradition in my family, chili. Indeed in many parts of America winter is a time for making such dishes and there are even cook-off competitions to see who can make the very best chili.

Chili comes in many different recipes and there are various ways of cooking it, some are spicy some are mild and some are beefy. It seems that almost everyone has their own special way of making chili, and for me that begins with a 100% cast iron dutch oven cookware. I have a collection of cast iron cookware but for making chili my favorite is the Lodge 10 ¼ inch kitchen dutch oven.The reason I like to make chili in this particular dutch oven is because I can make it anytime in the comfort of my kitchen on my IH range without having to use coals as a heat source.

So what is my version of chili? It all begins with the base ingredients. I start of with a KG of ground beef ( sometimes I use chuck or roast) and let it cook just until it’s done. Then add in a few cloves of freshly chopped garlic, a large yellow onion, several green peppers and saute them until the onions translucent.

After this in goes some diced tomatoes and tomato sauce. Of course it wouldn’t be chili without the special ingredient of chili, so in goes the chili powder, cumin, oregano, fresh rosemary, thyme and some special ingredients I am not at liberty to say ( a family secret).

In my opinion, you cannot make good chili without adding some beans to it. I prefer red kidney beans, but if I have none of those, pinto beans also do a fine job. Of course the last part of making dutch oven chili is the probably the most important, let it cook on a very low heat for 5 or 6 hours to really bring out all the wonderful flavours.

No chili dish would be complete without a side of good old fashioned cornbread. When making cornbread I also use a trustly old cast iron skillet. This one is a Lodge 10” skillet and makes the perfect baking pan for moist crumbly delicious cornbread.

Corn bread isn’t hard to make, just a little flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking soda-powder, eggs and pinch salt. I melt a few tablespoons of butter in the skillet and then dump in the batter and put it in the oven for 25 minutes and it comes great every time. After it cools for a good 20 minutes then spread some butter on top with a drizzle of honey.

So if winter has got you feeling a little down may I suggest some cast iron dutch oven home cooked chili and cornbread to raise your spirits? It works for me everytime.

冬は私の一番好きな季節です。寒くて、時には憂鬱な気持になっても、私は晴れた気候と冷たい空気の鮮明さを楽しみます。 この時期の私の楽しみの一つは、チリと呼ばれるおいしい冬の家族の伝統料理を作ることです。 アメリカの多くの地域では冬はそのような料理を作ります。最高のチリを作ることができるかという料理大会もあります。

チリにはさまざまなレシピがあり、さまざまな方法で調理します。肉の種類は人によって違い、辛口も甘口もあります。誰もがチリを作る独自の好きな方法がありますが、私にとってのそれは100％キャストアイロンダッチオーブン器具で始まります。
私はキャストアイロン器具をいくつか持っていますが、チリを作るための私のお気に入りはLODGEの10¼インチキッチンオーブンです。なぜなら焚き火が無くてもいつでも台所のＩＨのレンジで簡単に作ることができるからです。

さて、どのように私はオーブンチリを作るのでしょうか？それはベース作りから始まります。私は牛挽肉（時々チャックや肩ロース）を使います。それから新鮮に刻んだニンニク、大きなタマネギ、ピーマンを加え、タマネギが半透明になるまで炒めます。オーブンは熱を均等に分配するので調理するのがとても簡単です。

その後、切り刻んだトマトとトマトソースが入ります。もちろん、チリの味がなければチリといえませんのでチリパウダー、クミン、オレガノ、新鮮なローズマリー、タイムと特別なスパイス(我が家の秘伝！)も入れます。

私の意見ですが、豆を加えないと良いチリを作ることはできません。私はred kidney beans（金時豆）を加えるのが好きですが、なければpinto beans（うずら豆）も良いです。
すばらしい味わいを引き出すために、最後にダッチオーブンチリを作るのにおそらく最も重要なのは5,6時間くらい低い温度で煮込むことです。

また、昔の味のコーンブレッドがチリとよく合います。コーンブレッドを作るときに私はキャストアイロンのフライパンを使います。このロッジ10インチのフライパンで、しっとりとしたおいしいコーンブレッドが簡単に出来ます。

コーンブレッドを作るのは難しくありません。少量の小麦粉、コーンミール、砂糖、ベーキングソーダ、パウダー、卵と塩を混ぜるだけです。 バター大さじ５杯位をフライパンで溶かし、25分オーブンで焼きます。 20分間くらい冷却してからバターを付けて蜂蜜をかけると美味しいです。

あなたが冬に落ち込んだ気分になったとき、私はキャストアイロンチリとコーンブレッドをお薦めします、きっと気分が良くなりますよ。

正月は、オールシーズン リゾートの群馬県長野原町の北軽井沢で過ごしました。

北軽井沢といえば、浅間山！

①ホテルのベランダから望む「紅浅間」！

北軽井沢の中心地に、1962年（昭和37年）に廃線となった「草(くさ)軽(かる)電気鉄道」（以下、草軽電鉄と略記）の「北軽井沢駅」の遺構が保存されています。

②北軽井沢駅舎（北側）

善光寺を模したそうだ。後述の通り、「法政大学村」との関連でそのイニシャルの「Ｈ」が欄間に並んでいる。また、「ポケモンＧＯ」のジムが併設されている。

草軽電鉄は、著名な二大観光地の長野県軽井沢町と群馬県草津町の間、55.5kmを2時間半～3時間で結ぶ路線として賑わっていましたが、1945年（昭和20年）の国鉄（現在はJR）長野原線（渋川～長野原）（※）の全通や、その後のモータリゼーション・台風の被害等の影響で、廃線を余儀なくされました。

※その後、長野原線は吾妻(あがつま)線に、長野原駅は長野原(ながのはら)草津口(くさつぐち)駅に、それぞれ改称。

③Ｓ･･･軽井沢、Ｇ･･･草津

この遺稿の説明板には、以下が記されています。

『噴煙を上げる浅間山を眺めながら、温泉や観光を楽しむ多くの人々が草軽電鉄を利用し、沿線地域の経済発展に大きな影響を与えました。昭和の初め頃、この周辺に法政大学村が誕生し、関係者によって駅舎が新築され草軽電鉄に寄贈されました。

鉄道は、相次ぐ台風の被害や自動車の普及に伴い、1962（昭和37）年に廃線となり、この北軽井沢駅舎は、今でも当時の姿をとどめている唯一の駅舎です。2006（平成18）年に国の登録有形文化財に指定されました。』

I stayed in Kitakaruizawa, Naganohara Town, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, known as the all-season resort on the New Year days.

Kitakaruizawa reminds us of Mt. Asama.

At the town center of Kitakaruizawa, the remains of Kitakaruzawa Station of Kusakaru Electric Railway (abbreviated as Kusakaru), which became obsolete in 1962, have been well reserved.

②Kitakaruzawa Station（North Side）

It seems that this building imitated Zenkoji Temple.  As described later, “H“s of the initial are arranged in the fanlight in relation to “Hosei University village“.  Also, it should be noted that the gym of “Pokémon GO” is now located.

The Kusakaru was crowded as a route connecting 34.5 miles between Karuizawa Town, Nagano Prefecture and Kusatsu Town, Gumma Prefecture, two distinguished tourist destinations in two and a half hours to three hours, Nevertheless, it was affected by the opening of Naganohara Line of JNR (JR, currently) between Shibukawa and Naganohara (*), the motorization, the impact of the typhoon, etc., then, was obliged to discontinue the service.

(*) After that, the Naganohara Line was renamed to Agatsuma Line, and Naganohara station was renamed to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi station.

On the explanation board of this remains, the following is written:

Many tourists enjoying the sightseeing and the hot springs used the line to view Mt. Asama and that is greatly influenced the economic development of the wayside region.  Around 1930, Hosei University’s village was formed around this area and new station building was built by the school officials.  The Railroad became the abandoned railway in 1962 by the influence of the harm from the successive typhoon and the motorization.  This Kitakaruizawa station building is the only one station building that has kept the appearance of those days.  It was registered tangible cultural properties of Japan in 2006.

Its standard organization seems to be three vehicles, namely, an electric locomotive, one freight car and one passenger car.

This was the era when there was no automatic ticket vending machine.
The blue board with white letters is the timetable at the right end.

I do not know the Kusakaru before the abandonment, but it was a deep emotional ‘small journey’ that can taste the middle of Showa era.

今週の月曜日、東京は久々の大雪でした。私が通勤に利用しているJRは止まることは無かったのですが、すごく混んでいて、肋骨が折れるのではないか？と思うくらいギュウギュウで、各駅では更に人がドンドン乗ってくるので耐え切れなくなり、バスに乗り換えようと、だいぶ手前の駅で降りましたがバスも長打の列でした。
結局、雪の中30分以上歩いて家に帰りましたが、凍っていない雪での上を歩くのは問題なく、見慣れた風景とは違う雪景色を堪能しながら、結構楽しく歩けました。
セミナールームの近くの福徳神社の雪景色を見に行ったら、隣の福徳の森に小さな雪ダルマがいました。交通の便が悪くなり、混乱も起こり、不便な思いをする方が沢山出てしまいますが、たまに見る雪景色は美しく、一日で大分溶けてしまうのが少し残念に思えました。

さて、皆様おみくじひかれましたか？
私は取引先の方から開運干支あめ（おみくじ付）を頂き、なんと“大吉”でした!!今年は良いスタートが切れたので、キーワードは“開運”で良いことが沢山あるように縁起の良いことをして行きたいと思っています。

好評であればシリーズ化があるやも知れぬ、筆者の住む千葉県の隠れた名所をご紹介。昨年のユーキャン新語・流行語大賞（現代用語の基礎知識選）の年間大賞の一つに選ばれた「インスタ映え」するスポット先取りの予感。
 

第一回目となる今回は時期的に見頃となっている千葉県印西市本埜（もとの）にある「白鳥の郷」。遠くシベリアの地からやって来て越冬するオオハクチョウやコハクチョウを東京近郊ながら観察、撮影することができます。
 

周りに遮るものが一切無い田んぼの一角。ここに毎年1000羽近くの白鳥やカモなどが集います。立て看板には今日に至る経緯が次のようにありました –

「この白鳥は平成4年から11月になると当地に飛来し続けているものです。平成4年に農業用排水路工事のために、一時水田に水を溜め工事をしていたところ、その地に6羽の白鳥が舞い降りたのです。たまたま近くに住む、当時千葉県鳥獣保護員でありました出山光男さんがそれを見つけ、餌を与えようとすると警戒心から離れていってしまい、そんなやりとりが半日も続きました。そこで出山さんは、同じ時間に（朝8時、夕方4時）同じ服装で出かけるように心がけ、そんなやりとりが3年間続きました。そしてようやく餌付けに成功し、今ではすっかり馴れ餌を持っていくと向こうから寄って来るまでになりました。そして水田の持ち主であります、旧本埜村中根の増田邦夫さん、本橋源嗣さんに相談したところ、大切な水田を快く提供してくれました。

手厚い保護の甲斐があり、毎年増え続け、テレビ、新聞等のマスコミにも大きく報じられるようになり、平成7年には「本埜村白鳥を守る会」が発足し、村内外から500名を超える会員を募ることができました。お陰をもちまして、井戸およびポンプを設置していただき、きれいな水を供給することができました。私たちは自然の大切さと現在に残されている自然を後生に長く守り受け継がれるようこれからも頑張って活動していきたいと思っております。」　本埜村白鳥を守る会

餌やりや触れ合いは一切できず見学のみですが、野生の白鳥との貴重な出会いを実感できる場所となっています。併設されたビニールハウスでは地元産の野菜や小魚、川エビの販売もありますよ。

注意点として付近に駐車場が無いため手前の拡幅された農道に片側縦列駐車する必要があり、また白鳥を驚かせてしまう恐れがあるためペットの接近は禁止となっています。

寒さの厳しい日が続いていますが、穏やかな天気の日を狙って訪れてみてはいかがでしょうか。

早いもので2017年も後3日となりましたが如何お過ごしでしょうか？

今回はドイツのシュトゥットガルト（Stuttgart）の小さな旅です。中央駅からドイツ鉄道（Deutsche Bahn）で十数分、スポーツカーで有名なポルシェ（Porsche）の工場の隣、「ポルシェ博物館」を訪れました。

①鉄道の国・ドイツを象徴するような風景

ドイツにおいて、鉄道のシステムは、旅客・貨物ともに充実しています。メルセデス・ベンツの工場にも、多くの引込線が敷設されています。

②地下にあるシュトゥットガルト中央駅

③ワンコも同乗可能？

④ポルシェ博物館は、郊外の駅前にあります。

⑤行き先表示・・・日本のように何時何分発ではなく、待ち時間が表示されています。

⑥列車の到着シーンです。

⑦ポルシェの工場等の施設に向かうサラリーマンその他が下車して来ます。日本の通勤風景と似ていますね。

Hi, this is Fe@NJ , who has passed Second Grade of Timetable Test in Japan.

Let me introduce a short trip in Stuttgart, Germany.  From the central station by the German Railway, Deutsche Bahn, for ten and several minutes, we visited Porsche Museum next to a famous sports car factory of Porsche. 

①We can see the landscape that symbolizes Germany as the country of the railroad.

It is noted that the railway system is full of both passengers and freight in Germany.  Many drop-in lines are laid in Mercedes-Benz factory as well.

②The Stuttgart central station is in the basement.

③The passengers seem to be able to accompany doggies.

④The Porsche Museum is located in front of a suburban station.

⑤Although it is a destination display, it does not indicate the next train’s departure time like in Japan, but its waiting time is shown.

⑥The train has just arrived.

⑦From the train, passengers, who look like workers going to facilities of the Porsche etc. and others are getting off.  This is similar to Japanese commuter landscape.

⑧There are three Porsche’s in the air at the entrance of the museum.

⑨Porsche Carrera GT blew out of the world in 2003.

⑩We returned to downtown Stuttgart and enjoyed the Christmas market.

2017年12月13日(水) ダイワボウ情報システム株式会社様 主催のDIS ICT EXPO in 鹿児島（かごしま県民交流センター）におきまして、ActiveImage Protector 2018を展示しました。

こちらがネットジャパンの出展コーナーです。
おかげさまで多くのお客様にお立ち寄りいただき、様々な情報交換や生の声を得られるとても良い機会となりました。

こちらは、開始前の展示会場の様子です。

今回も多くのお客様に、お立ち寄りいただきありがとうございました。また、“製品説明に来てほしい”というご依頼や“バックアップ提案の相談をしたい”というお話をいただいておりますの、可能な限りお伺いさせていただきますので、よろしくお願いいたします。

来年のNHK大河ドラマは、西郷隆盛を主人公としたドラマが放映されるようですので、鹿児島がブレークしそうですね。「ActiveImage Protector」もリリース開始から10年の節目を迎えますので、ブレークできるようにさらに展示会出展や提案活動を続けてまいりますので、引き続きよろしくお願い申し上げます。
